Deslizamentos de terra interrompem eletricidade em bairro chique de LA: crise iminente no Rancho Palos Verdes.
Anúncios
The situation in Rancho Palos Verdes has become so critical that Southern California Edison decided to disconnect power to 140 homes in the Portuguese Bend area, with additional outages anticipated in the near future. According to city council member David Bradley, the movement of the land has accelerated significantly within the last year, with some areas shifting up to 10 inches a week. The alarming rate of movement has raised concerns among residents who reside in multi-million dollar mansions in the neighborhood, as they witness the ground shifting before their eyes.
Utility providers are working diligently to mitigate the risks associated with the landslides, as the safety of the residents is of paramount importance. Luxury neighborhood gas and water services have also been disconnected to prevent any potential hazards. The slow progression of the 680-acre landslide, which has been ongoing for years, has been exacerbated by heavy rainfall in California over the past couple of years. The challenging situation has prompted the authorities to allocate funds for disaster assistance, with LA County Supervisor Janice Hahn urging for additional support from the state and federal governments.
During a press conference, Supervisor Hahn emphasized the urgency of the situation and called for immediate action to address the escalating crisis. She highlighted the need for more resources and assistance to effectively deal with the impact of the landslides. Sheriff Robert Luna announced the deployment of drones to monitor the affected area and ensure the safety of the residents. However, some residents have expressed frustration and reluctance to leave their homes, despite the potential dangers posed by the landslides.
The historic landslides in the region, including the slow-moving one in Portuguese Bend, have been reactivated by the Crenshaw Boulevard extension constructed in 1956. The significant movement of the land has resulted in houses shifting hundreds of feet over time, causing damage to infrastructure such as roads and utilities. The costly repairs and restoration efforts required to address the impact of the landslides have strained the city’s resources, necessitating additional funding for long-term solutions.
The ongoing landslides in Rancho Palos Verdes serve as a stark reminder of the environmental challenges faced by communities living in high-risk areas. The gravity of the situation demands a coordinated response from all levels of government, as well as proactive measures to mitigate the impact of natural disasters. The safety and well-being of the residents must be prioritized, and immediate action is crucial to prevent further harm and ensure the resilience of the affected community.
